Posted on December 1, 2012 by Sean Breen
If you reach the age of 80 there is a 50% chance that you will have dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.   That number is staggering and can be significantly reduced if patients had a road map on what they can do to reduce their odds.   The purpose of this blog is not to bore you with details or physiology but to give you the basic steps you need to take.  1. Optimize Hormone levels:   Estradiol (estrogen):  there are hundreds of published medical studies linking estradiol levels to memory and cognitive decline.   One of them most important studies

Top Supplements For The Heart and Cardiovascular System

Posted on December 1, 2012 by Sean Breen
Many times patients ask me what the best supplements to take everyday for the heart.   Specifically I want to address the top 4 supplements (with a few extras) that have proven benefit to patients with any cardiovascular disease (i.e high blood pressure, prior heart attack).  All of these supplements can be found on my online store and are pharmaceutical grade (meaning they have been tested for purity and standardized) 1.  Coenzyme Q10:  the dose is anywhere from 100-360mg per day.     Coenzyme Q10 helps the cells regenerate ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which is the main form of energy that

Posted on October 27, 2012 by Sean Breen
When was the last time your doctor told you to get your minerals by eating raw almonds and brazilnuts?   What he most likely told you do to is go the the vitamin store and get a “good” Calcium-Magnesium-Zinc complex.    The problem with trying to get your minerals through supplementation is that we can not mimic nature and supplements are often poorly absorbed.    Supplements are also expensive! The number one mineral deficiency found in athletes and patients in the United States is Magnesium.    Mg has over 300 functions in the body so achieving optimal health when you

Carotid Ultrasounds Detect Early Plaque Build Up: Great screening tool

Posted on October 16, 2012 by Sean Breen
Did you know that 50% of patients who suffer heart attacks have normal EKG’s. normal cholesterol values and no symptoms prior to having a heart attack?   The reason why that should scare you is because other than these basic screening tools very few physicians are ordering advanced tests to predict the likelihood of having a heart attack or stroke.  The purpose of this blog is to educate you about what other options you have to screen for cardiovascular disease. Specifically the carotid ultrasound to look for thickness of the wall (intima media thickness) and for early plaque build up.
